Abstract

The review article presents contradictory modern ideas about the mechanisms of formation and progression, the clinical and prognostic significance of coronary calcification in patients with cardiovascular risk factors and various forms of coronary heart disease. The views on the choice of the optimal diagnostic method for detecting coronary calcification from the standpoint of modern clinical guidelines are described. The modern ideas about the role of cholesterol-lowering therapy in the stabilization of atherosclerotic plaques from the position of calcification activation are reflected. For the compilation of the review article, available materials from foreign library databases (Library's MEDLINE / PubMed database) were used.
